Last week was my birthday and I thought I would “pop” home to England to visit my parents and my sister came up to see me. I was really excited about running in the UK until I saw some of the elevations on the runkeeper plans.  I made contact with a runner in the UK near my parents house but found that the Wingerworth Wobblers run at precisely the same time my sister was coming up on the train so unfortunately I was not able to join them.

However my sister was looking forward to joining me as I ran but as she is not a runner she was going to borrow dad’s (folding) bike.  Saturday I planned to do an 8mile run and so we decided to run along a nearby park path that wAndy and sister heading off down the pathas about a 2 mile loop.  The weather was perfect and it was nice to have someone to hold the water and pass me a couple of energy sweets every now again.  Unfortunately for her I think the saddle was not too comfortable but she did a good job keeping up with me. Mum and Dad came down to the park to take some photos of the two of us (thanks Dad!). It was nice running on a dirt path rather than the hard surfaces that I’d run on in the US and it was nice to have my first international run in the UK and spend the time with my sister so a great first run.  It was also my longest run yet of 8 miles and the average speed for this distance came in at a decent 10.5 minutes for me so I’m very pleased.

After the run it was time for a quick shower and then off to a Toby Carvery for a huge dinner – well worth the run 🙂

Good, longest run (7m) so far.

[wprunkeeper activity=”73532566″]The miles are starting to creep up now. Having run the 10k a couple of weeks ago, this was the time for a 7 mile run.  I wanted to do a different run so I found an out and back run along the Heritage trail in Hilliard towards Plain City.

This is a very easy run – very flat and with a choice of running either on tarmac or on the gravel next to the track.   Unfortunately this day was pretty windy and the wind was blowing against me all the way out. I figured this would be ok as it would mean an easier run on the way back. I think the addition of the wind balanced out the tiredness as my average pace seemed to always be a 10:34 mile. Considering I am doing the 5:1 run walk ratio, I’m pretty pleased with this time.

After the run I figured I was going to ache the following day after the longest run so I went to Kroger to get some epsom salts as I figured a nice hot bath soak would be so much better than an ice bath.  Walking around Kroger in the air conditioning felt freezing but the bath felt really good.

Later that night I was thinking that the salts weren’t the miracle cure that they seemed to be made out to be, but the following day, Sunday my legs felt good and I was almost ready to go running Sunday night.

However the next couple of days have been really busy at work and getting ready for my trip to start my international running debut!

My left knee hurts now – Why does injury occur after a great run?

[wprunkeeper activity=”71345034″]Last week was probably the best week of running that I’ve had so far with the furthest distance in a day, in a week (more than 15 miles) and the longest amount of time for a run after I managed over 6.2 miles (10k distance) last Saturday afternoon. It was a great run but it’s taken over a week to recover with my left knee hurting. It didn’t help that I also banged the knee in the car door during the week. I went out to join the Turtles group on Thursday night but only managed to run about 1/2 mile before I decided it was going to hurt too much to even think about running for 40 minutes and I didn’t want to injure myself anymore.

Thankfully the knee doesn’t seem to be as bad today so I may be able to get a shorter run in tomorrow. It is pretty frustrating to have a really good run and then be sick.  Having said that, the last time this happened I was off for about 2 months and needed surgery.
